Spotlight on 2007 MMM Fund Recipient
Like a spark to a flame Ali lights the MMM path...
Profile | Ali Russell
2007 MMM Fund recipient Ali Russell, under the mentorship of Anna Craney, used her scholarship to produce and edit The NOW now, a 15 minute documentary on Sydney's notorious experimental musicians Clare Cooper, Clayton Thomas and Jim Denley, who began 'the NOW now' festival in Sydney in 2001."...it has been really great having a work space to come to & access to such great facilities. The mentorship element was absolutely fantastic. It made editing this film a different experience for me & the film is significantly better as a result"
In the past year Ali has been working on several projects including,
-A short documentary, 'All the Eights, 88' made for the International Documentary Challenge which was selected as a finalist and will be screening in April 2008 at Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival in Toronto.
-A short documentary, 'My Favourite Thing' selected to screen at Little Big Shots International Film Festival for Kids in September 2008 at the Sydney Opera House
-A half-hour documentary, ‘Munda Yumadoo Iliga - Leave the Land As it is’ which is currently in development, about 4 generations of Indigenous women from the remote South Australian desert fighting to protect their sacred sites from mining
-A music video for Sydney electro band ‘Press Eject’
From April 17th to the 28th, Ali will be in Toronto, Canada attending the International Hot Docs Film Festival where she will have a chance to meet and network with filmmakers from around the world, before coming back to Sydney to take up a full-time residency at sQuareOne. We will be holding a celebration night for her later in the year along with a screening of some of her work.
sQuareOne and Vibewire would like to congratulate Ali on her remarkable achievements over the past year.
sQuareOne is now accepting entries for the 2008 MMM Fund.
